Instagram Makes It Easier To Discover Your Favorite Things

In case you missed it, Instagram recently made a significant change to its app that could have a big impact - a positive one - on how you interact with your favorite content providers.

Instagram users can now more easily follow a specific topic they're interested in by following hashtags. Users will still be able to follow accounts as before.

The upgrade is aimed to help you "discover more posts from the interests and communities you care about," Instagram said in a release following the December 2017 update.

It's now easier for Instagram users to discover photos, videos, and People relevant to their passions.

How to Follow Hashtags

Here's how to use the Instagram app to follow a hashtag:

1) Tap on any hashtag in the app that interests you - whether it appears in your feed or you locate it via the search function.

2) At the top of the resulting hashtag landing page, tap on the "Follow" button. Several examples are shown below.

Once you follow a specific hashtag, the Instagram algorithm will pick and choose posts that feature that hashtag and display them in your feed, in Instagram Stories, and in the Following section of your profile.

The image below at right is an example of what a photo from a followed hashtag looks like.

You can unfollow a hashtag at any time.

To do so, simply tap the hashtag and then tap on the Following button.

5 Furniture Styles That Can Define Who You Are

Egowall members can decorate their living space(s) using any of the nearly 1000 pieces of digital furniture available in five different styles:

  • Colonial
  • Contemporary
  • Retro
  • Science Fiction
  • Kid

Let's take a closer look at each type of furniture you'll find in the game. Each summary below includes sample images of the relevant furniture style in Egowall.

Some content in this post is adapted from external resources. The links labeled "History" point to the websites where the information was obtained.

Colonial (55 available pieces)

History: Colonial was the most notable traditional furniture style from 1900 to 1960.

It includes two sub-styles - Early American and 18th Century Colonial.

The 18th Century Colonial style was more formal and included higher grade furnishings and materials.

Fabrics included tapestries, velveteens, and linen. It leaned toward English styles.

By contrast, the Early American style is more casual and rustic.

It was considered to be much more comfortable, and so was used in summer cottages and cabins as well as smaller primary homes.

Contemporary Table

Contemporary Table

Contemporary (655 available pieces).

History: Contemporary (aka modern) furniture refers to designs produced from the late 19th century through the present that is influenced by modernism.

Post-World War II ideals of cutting excess, commodification, and practicality of materials in design heavily influenced the aesthetic of the furniture.

Modern Sectional Sofa - Red/White

Modern Sectional Sofa - Red/White

It was a tremendous departure from all furniture design that had gone before it.

Dark or gilded carved wood and richly patterned fabrics from the the decorative arts period gave way to the glittering simplicity and geometry of polished metal.

This shift to minimalist principles of design are usually attributed to the introduction of new technology, changes in philosophy, and the influences of the principles of architecture.

The Contemporary Table and Modern Sectional Sofa seen above - along with all our Contemporary furniture items - are available in the Contemporary section of our Furniture shop.

Retro Console Cabinet

Retro Console Cabinet

Retro (78 available pieces)

History: Per Wikipedia, retro style is consciously derivative or imitative of trends, music, modes, fashions, or attitudes of the past.

The term "retro" has been in use since the 1960s to describe new artifacts that self-consciously refer to particular modes, motifs, techniques, and materials of the past.

Upholstered Sofa - Blue

Upholstered Sofa - Blue

When designers, manufacturers and customers speak about retro furniture, they are referring to a style of furniture that looks back with nostalgia and pays homage to styles that were once popular.

Retro furniture was popular in the decades of 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Recently, the industry has added the 1980s to the list.

Retro style can be whimsical, it can allude to pop-culture and even be tacky or kitschy.

The retro style furniture you'll find in Egowall is all of the above.

SciFi (60 available pieces)

Though science fiction literary works have been published since the 16th century, there is no specific science fiction furniture style.

Despite that, a lot of creative designers have come up with scifi-inspired pieces of furniture to meet the thematic desires of genre fans.

Metal Storage Case

Metal Storage Case

Think about the various science fiction works you've seen on television or in the movies.

In them, furniture seems to fall into two categories - clean and futuristic (or at least what the designers at the time THOUGHT would appear futuristic) or dirty and industrial.

The science fiction themed furniture you'll discover in Egowall falls neatly into those camps, with a dash of color here and there.

Our scifi furniture offerings allow hardcore zealots to share their love of the genre and make whatever living space they are placed in a futuristic showcase.

We recognize that it's not only adults who want to share their passions and get to know people who have common interests.

So not only does Egowall welcome children (ages 13+) as members, we also provide kid-themed furniture for them to use in decorating their living spaces.

Our child-themed furniture covers the following genres:

  • Jungle (33 pieces)
  • Princess (18 pieces)
  • Sport (9 pieces)

The sample assets you see at right (click to see a larger view) illustrate how beautiful and creative all of these assets are.

They become even more impressive and functional - when you - or your child use them within the game to document important events and accomplishments.

Who Are You? We Really Want To Know

We sometimes get asked about the origin of our name.

An “ego wall” is one where someone places all of his/her certificates, awards, etc. – the things that he or she is most proud of. You've probably seen one when you visit your physician.

Our flagship and namesake product - Egowall - is an online implementation of this conceit.

The Concept

Egowall is a browser-based video game and social platform for showcasing your memories and achievements.

We believe that

  • your online persona should be more than a random collection of updates, photos and comments

  • you should have an online home that your social connections can visit at any time to learn about the things that make you unique

  • that virtual home should be a safe and secure place where you can easily control who gets to see the things that you share

Egowall addresses all of these beliefs.

But What Can You Do There?

Once you've signed up to play Egowall, our unique living spaces (sixteen different ones at this writing) let you establish a place that your friends, family and colleagues can visit to:

  • catch up on your activities

  • review your personal and professional accomplishments

  • learn about the things that interest you, and

  • communicate with you

Some of the things you can do with Egowall:

  • Explore and Interact - Walk around your own personal world and visit other people's spaces too. You're sure to see exciting new locations, furniture, decorations, and exotic houses.

  • Create and Decorate - Add furniture from your own inventory to any space or get more at our shop. Decorate the walls with your own photos. Change the appearance, color, texture of almost any surface.

  • Invite Friends and Earn Points - Share your spaces on social media and earn points to spend at our shop. Your friends can visit your spaces, leave notes and comments, and see who you are.

Unlike in some other social applications, visitors don't need to worry about missing something that you have posted, because it is always present in the space for them to see.

Of course, you can share your spaces with your social connections.

Most importantly, each room's privacy can be configured to ensure that the only people who get to see what you have shared are the ones that you want to see those items. You have total control.

And that's just the beginning; there's so much more that you can do in Egowall.

Egowall is Different

In addressing some of the shortcomings of other social networks, Egowall is a platform on which its users can showcase and share their interests and achievements in ways that are not possible elsewhere.
